There’s all this pressure to make it clever—but also clear.
To make it about your reader—but also about you.
To make it professional—but never, ever boring.
Turns out, writing your own About page is hard—even when “website copywriter” is your literal job title.
(MAYBE I’M NOT SUPPOSED TO ADMIT THAT, BUT WHAT THE HELL—IT’S TRUE.)
And also: wedding industry copywriter for creatives and educators who want the words on their website to stick with their dream clients long after they've closed the lid of their laptop for the day.
What version of my story do you want to hear first?
All I knew about copywriting came from Mad Men—and although I did envy Don Draper’s in-office nap couch—I was pretty sure I couldn’t get hired on Madison Avenue.
For one, my degrees are actually in languages and translation (to pre-empt the question: Spanish, Portuguese, and French, in descending order of how well I speak them).
Luckily, that plus my teenage website-making experience landed me my first office job. Among other things, I got a crash course in SEO, read dozens of corporate brand voice guides, and learned how to manage a feedback call with 10 stakeholders across 4 time zones (emphatically not recommended).
…and then I had a baby and quickly realized that going back to the 9-5 8-6 wasn’t going to work for me, so I had to figure out what came next.
Turns out that my background in literary translation was a perfect fit for copywriting, given everything it taught me about voice & personality. Add to that years of experience figuring out why people do (and don’t) buy things on websites, and it was practically written in the stars.
I don’t have a clear-cut origin story to tell you. I didn’t work as a cake decorator at Publix (I kinda wish, though) or do wedding photography on the side.
What happened was that I was hired by an elopement photographer to write her site (it’s still one of my faves), and I fell in love with the industry. Pun definitely intended.
I loved the creativity. Loved working with small businesses and helping them get clarity on just how brilliant they are. Loved the hilarious stories my clients told and yes, loved looking at gorgeous pictures of their work.
When it hits, it hits. (Also: parties! We love parties.)
